Pros

  • Rich aromatic and fruity flavors
  • Made in Italy
  • Available in most supermarkets and online stores

Cons

  • Not strong enough for some
  • Too acidic for a few drinkers

Lavazza Espresso Italiano Ground Coffee Blend is our top choice for Moka Pots because it has a pleasing and seamless flavor profile perfect for your day-to-day Moka pot brew.

This medium roast coffee is well-balanced, with floral and fruity notes. It has lower acidity compared to dark roasts and is stronger than light roasts. It is not excessively robust or bitter.

The coffee is produced using 100% Arabica beans that Lavazza gets from various regions such as Southeast Asia, Africa, Central America, and South America.

Since it is multi-origin, it contains a variety of tasting notes that are carefully combined to complement your coffee drink.

Lavazza Espresso Italiano grounds are a good choice for those who prefer medium roasts. It is great for regular coffee and drinks such as Americanos, Lattes, and Cappuccinos.

Since the Lavazza Espresso Italiano grounds are a medium roast, they may not be strong enough for some Moka Pot and Moka Express users. For those seeking a more intense experience, a darker roast may be preferable.

The product is offered in various sizes, including a 1.25 lb bag and an 8 oz 4-pack, which you can purchase on Amazon, other online retailers, and local grocery stores.

The espresso grounds come in well-sealed bags or cans to maintain their freshness.

If you do not like this particular ground espresso, perhaps San Francisco Bay Whole Bean Coffee is a more suitable option.

Pros

  • Unique taste/flavor
  • Low acidity
  • Perfect roast level

Cons

  • Too strong for some drinkers

The San Francisco Bay Whole Bean Coffee Espresso Roast is our runner up for Moka Pot because of its unique flavor and balanced roast level.

It is a medium-dark roast, which means it walks the fine line between medium and dark roasts. It is neither too strong nor too bitter, and it is pleasantly smooth. It’s great for those who want to brew a well-balanced cup of coffee in their Moka Pot.

These beans are suitable for all types of coffee drinks, including regular coffee, espressos, lattes, cappuccinos, and more.

Compared to similar whole bean coffees, this San Francisco Bay express roast is about an average cost. But not the cheapest option.

That said, they are only available in a whopping 2-pound bag. And while whole beans last longer than pre-ground coffee, that’s a lot of beans to get through before they start to go stale.

This espresso roast uses 100% Arabica beans from Central America. They have a unique flavor that is unlike any other coffee I’ve tried. I think it has a perfect strength. But some purchasers state it is too strong for them.

San Francisco Bay Coffee has been producing high-quality beans since 1979, and they have a great track record.

If you’d prefer a pre-ground espresso roast instead, consider the Bialetti Caffe Italian Roasted grounds.

3. Bialetti Caffe Italian Roasted – Best Espresso Grounds

These espresso grounds are great for any type of coffee or espresso beverage you can brew in your Moka Pot. They aren’t too strong or weak, making them a good choice for most drinkers.

That said, these grounds are expensive. However, considering their unique roasting process and that they’re made specifically for Moka Pots, the higher price point makes sense.

The Bialetti Caffe Italian Roasted Espresso Grounds come in an airtight, 8.8 oz bag. Which is relatively small but helps ensure you use all the grounds before they go stale.

If these espresso grounds don’t sound like your ideal flavor, perhaps the Illy Classico Espresso Ground Coffee does.

Illy’s coffee is preservative-free and has been honored on the “World’s Most Ethical Companies” list 10 times, which ensures its coffee is sourced and farmed ethically.

These grounds have a smooth and strong flavor profile, although some individuals may find them lacking in strength due to being a medium roast. Along with hints of chocolate and caramel, there are also notes of orange blossom and jasmine, making it an enticing coffee drink for your Moka Pot.

The espresso grounds are packaged in an air-sealed tin weighing 8.8 ounces, providing maximum freshness until you open it.

The Illy Classico Espresso Ground Coffee has a short shelf life once you open it, but this is a common issue with all espresso grounds.

Illy has been producing sustainable coffee for over thirty years and roasting beans since 1933; a lengthy track record of quality coffee is always a plus.

If Illy’s medium roast is too mild for your tastes, Death Wish ground coffee may be what you’re looking for.

5. Death Wish Ground Coffee – Most Caffeine

OrganicUSDA Organic

Pros

  • Double the caffeine of most dark roasts
  • Never bitter
  • Available in 16oz ground bags

Cons

  • Pricier than other ground coffees
  • Caffeine content may be too much for some drinkers

The Death Wish Dark Roast ground coffee is a dark roast that is best for Moka Pot brewers who enjoy a potent and robust coffee or espresso drink.

Death Wish coffee has a higher caffeine content compared to other dark roast coffees due to its unique roasting process and use of specialty coffee beans.

Brewing in a Moka Pot typically extracts more caffeine than other hot brewing methods, making your Death Wish brew contain even more caffeine.

The Death Wish dark roast coffee has a strong taste with hints of cherry and chocolate. It’s not too bitter or acidic, which appeals to most who enjoy a bold cup of coffee.

The product comes in a 16 oz bag with a label clearly showing the roast date for freshness. It is certified by USDA Organic and Fairtrade, meaning it doesn’t contain harmful chemicals and comes from sustainable farms.

Death Wish coffee contains high levels of caffeine, which may be enjoyed by some individuals. However, it isn’t good for those with caffeine sensitivity. I recommend you assess your own caffeine tolerance before consuming this coffee.

Death Wish Dark Roast has a higher price compared to other similar roasts. However, its strong caffeine content and pleasant flavor may make it worth the cost.

If you find the Death Wish coffee to be too pricey or too high in caffeine, you might want to try the illy Coffee, Moka Ground instead.

This illy roast has a balanced flavor with tasting notes of chocolate. It is smooth, has low acid, and is not bitter. It’s best for Moka Pot owners that like the illy brand and prefer their milder roasts.

As such, it is great for brewing multiple beverages in your Moka Pot– both coffee and espresso-based drinks.

But it is more expensive than similar ground coffee for Moka Pots of similar quantity. However, it is not prohibitively expensive.

This illy roast is nothing out of the ordinary; it is a good, solid coffee for your daily Moka Pot brew. It comes in a 4-pack of 8.8 oz cans online and is available in 2-packs and single packs at grocery stores and supermarkets.

Pros

  • Maple syrup and cherry tasting notes
  • Complex aroma
  • Rainforest Alliance Certified and Fair-Trade Certified

Cons

  • Acidicity too high for some

This coffee is a medium roast with tasting notes of maple syrup, cherry, full-bodied, and a strong intensity that is typical of Volcanica roasts. It also has a mild acidity and a distinct spicy aroma.

This Volcanica roast is priced higher in comparison to other options on this list.

However, the unique taste of the Moka Pot coffee made from these grounds justifies its higher price. The distinguishing factor is the method in which the beans are grown; Volcanica exclusively cultivates its coffee beans at high elevations in volcanic regions.

Specifically, these beans are grown on Sulawesi Island, which imparts unique flavors that make this type of coffee a top choice in India and other nearby regions.

In high altitudes, coffee plants absorb can absorb more nutrients and minerals, resulting in a distinct flavor. These whole beans are of high quality and can impress guests, or you keep it to yourself and enjoy it alone.

These whole beans come in a 16-ounce bag, I recommend transferring them to an airtight, opaque container and keeping it at room temperature to maintain freshness. Volcanica recommends this storage method with all its coffee.

Some people note a high level of acidity in this coffee, despite its low acid composition. However, I suspect they were using stale grounds as I did not find this coffee acidic at all.

Volcanica Sulawesi, Celebes Kalossi whole beans, along with all of the brand’s coffee, holds certifications from Rainforest Alliance and Fair-Trade, indicating that their coffee is sourced, farmed, and processed in an ethical manner.

Looking for something more familiar or closer to home instead? Perhaps the Starbucks Espresso Roast whole beans is your best option?

Starbucks ethically sources these beans from multiple countries within the “Coffee Belt,” as they do with all their coffee varieties.

This means all of Starbucks’ beans are grown without harmful environmental or unfair labor practices on the farms they partner with.

One potential drawback is that the espresso roast whole beans are packaged in 28 oz bags (the same size as other whole beans from Starbucks). This quantity may be challenging to consume before the beans lose their freshness.

For those who prefer an alternative to Starbucks or want a decaffeinated option, Lavazza is worth considering.

Roast

The roast level of coffee ranges from blonde, light, medium, dark. And since the roast level affects the coffee’s strength, flavor, and more, it is a top consideration for Moka Pots. Most people that use Moka Pots, including me, recommend medium to dark roasts.

Dark roasts are more intense, have bolder flavors, and are stronger, which is what you should expect when you brew coffee in a Moka Pot.

That said, it is up to your personal preference on which roast level you choose.

RoastFlavorBest for
Light roastMild to mediumCoffee drinks
Medium roastMedium Coffee drinks, cold brew
Dark roastStrongCoffee, cold brew, and espresso drinks
Espresso roastVery strongEspresso drinks

Grind size

If you decide to get pre-ground coffee for your Moka Pot, I recommend using medium-fine to fine grind size. Otherwise, get whole beans and grind it yourself for an even fresher brew.

The grind size impacts how fast and thoroughly the coffee grounds and hot water mix during brewing. This affects how much flavor it extracts from the beans into your cup of coffee.

Just make sure you don’t use larger grind sizes in your Moka Pot. A larger size grind doesn’t have enough surface area to absorb enough water work. You’ll end up with hot water with a slight coffee taste.

Plus, the larger ground might clog your Moka Pot and damage it.

Certifications

Organic and Fair Trade certifications are another important factor when you pick a coffee for your Moka Pot.

A USDA-certified organic coffee won’t have any artificial preservatives, colorings, flavors, or other additives.

On the flip side, a Fair Trade certification means the coffee was sustainably grown and harvested. It also means the company supported the local farmers and communities that cultivate it.

Therefore, if you want a natural coffee for your Moka Pot, get a brand with these certifications.

Price/Budget

Price and quality are important when you are shopping for Moka Pot coffee.

As you probably know, lower-quality coffee is less expensive, and higher quality is more expensive. That said, you can sometimes find great deals.

For example, a 12 oz bag of whole-bean coffee can range in price from $8 to $25, depending on quality and brand.

TypeCost range (budget to high-quality)
Pre-ground coffee$8 to $15
Single origin whole bean coffee$15 to $25
Multi-origin whole bean coffee$10 to $20
Speciality Moka Pot coffee$14 to $24

Single-origin vs. Multi-origin

Single-origin and multi-origin coffee is another important consideration when you are looking for coffee for your Moka Pot.

Single-origin coffees are made from beans that come from a single country, region, or farm

Single-origin coffees emphasize the flavors, tasting notes, textures, etc., of a single bean species and the region it was grown in. This creates a strong and consistent flavor. Single-origin coffees tend to cost more, but sometimes they are cheaper than multi-origins.

As you might have concluded, multi-origin coffees are made from beans that come from two or more locations.

The beans can be of the same species from different regions or different species for the same or different regions. The combination possibilities are endless.

Multi-origin coffees can have complex flavors by combining tasting notes from different locations/beans into a unique blend.

That said, some multi-origin blends have inconsistent flavors and unappealing tastes. More than often, it is the less expensive type.

One is not always better than the other, per se. However, you may find you prefer some single origins more.

Packaging date

When choosing coffee for your Moka pot, find its packaging date. To get the best taste, freshness, quality, etc., get one that has a relatively recent roast date.

Whole beans last long than pre-ground coffee and fine-ground coffee goes stale the fastest. than coffee grounds. This is because the fine grind has much more surface area, allowing it to come into contact with air and decompose faster.

But you can’t easily verify the packaging date if you purchase online. So, try contacting the seller and ask them nicely to ship you a fresh batch instead of one that’s been sitting for a while.

Best brands

While browsing for your Moka Pot coffee, you should seriously consider the top coffee brands, including Starbucks, Lifeboost, Lavazza, and Illy.

Starbucks has a wide range of whole beans and ground coffee with almost every roast and flavor profile you can think of. Plus, you can buy its coffee at any Starbucks coffee shop, most grocery stores, and online.

Other top brands like illy and Lazazza have several high-quality coffee roasts as well, including whole beans and different grind sizes.

Our Verdict

Here are the top 3 choices. All three have fantastic tastes, great quality, and the perfect roast level and grind size for your Moka Pot.
